Sport & Recreation Working Committee

Mandate and Purpose

The Tripartite Forum Sport and Recreation Working Committee is an effective component of the Tripartite process, with a clearly defined vision, role, identified timelines and resources for implementing its plan and strategies. Physical activity, sport and recreation, healthy eating and the historical and cultural component of sport are recognized and valued as key drivers for the health and well-being of Aboriginal individuals and communities. There are greater opportunities and participation in physical activity, sport, and recreation, leading to heathier lifestyles. A strong, provincial Aboriginal sport body exists. Data is available and utilized to monitor trends, changes, and progress.

Targets

  • All band-operated schools will have 30-minute physical activity in school. (PE, Intramurals, DPA, after-school programs.)
  • All band-operated schools will have a “no junk” policy.
  • All band-operated schools offer extra-curricular activities (intramurals, before/after-school programs.)
  • An increase in physical activity, sport and recreation opportunities for all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
  • Increase in the number of bands with a designated sport/recreation/physical activity staff person.
  • All bands will have identified a physical activity, sport and recreation lead and annual priorities, including community development and infrastructure.
  • An increase in the number of qualified/trained leaders (coaching, officiating, administration, fitness leaders.)
  • The Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Sport Council is active and functioning while linking with a designated lead (portfolio) with the KMKNO.
  • Effective communications network.
  • Increase in funding for sport and recreation, and physical activity based on partnership approach.
  • System in place for effective sharing and management of data collection.
  • Tripartite Forum Sport and Recreation Working Committee is deemed to be an effective mechanism to support the vision and goals.
  • Increased recognition and value of the historical and culture component of sport.
  • Enhance link with major sport events/competitions (NAIG/Provincial Games, National Hockey Championships.)

2018-2019 Workplan Goals

  • Goal One (1): Increase the involvement and opportunities in physical activity, sport, and recreation for all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
  • Goal Two (2): Promote greater awareness and practices of (safety and supportive environment) healthy eating, and healthy lifestyle choices for all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
  • Goal Three (3): Increase the capacity (human, fiscal, and physical resources) of Mi’kmaq individuals and communities to provide quality physical activity, sport, and recreation and health eating experiences for all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.
  • Goal Four (4): Support a strong Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Sport Council.
  • Goal Five (5): Collect, share, and manage data on trends, changes and progress in physical activity, sport, recreation, and healthy eating to all Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia.

Tripartite Forum

The Mi’kmaq • Nova Scotia • Canada Tripartite Forum was formed in 1997, as a partnership between the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada, to strengthen and to resolve issues of mutual concern affecting Mi’kmaw communities.
