History/Made in Nova Scotia
The Mi’kmaq – Nova Scotia – Canada Tripartite Forum was founded in 1997.
It is a partnership between the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada.
The forum’s mandate is to strengthen relationships and resolve issues of mutual concern affecting Mi’kmaw communities. The CMM administers the Tripartite Secretariat, which assets in daily forum operations.
At its June 16-17, 2005, Assembly in Bear River First Nation the Tripartite Forum sought advice from the St. Mary’s University Business Centre.
The Business Center carried out an organizational review that gauged the Forum’s effectiveness. The review was released in 2005, and in March 2006, the Officials Committee adopted a staged approach to the recommendations in the review.
These recommendations were supported by the Executive Committee in November 2006, and included the need to implement a project-management style approach for all project-based committee work.
Part of this project-management style approach was the need for a skilled Project Manager to lead implementation.
In 2019 and 2021, the forum refined its structure by adapting to changing community needs and priorities.
Responsibility for the Project Fund for Social and Economic Change was split between The CMM and the UNSM.
The Project Fund Committee was redeveloped and related protocols were updated to improve efficiencies, better support project working committees and address gaps in service delivery.
In 2021, secretariat work was split between The CMM and the Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq (UNSM). The management of the fund is overseen by a project coordinator.
The forum’s working committees are administrated by both The CMM and the UNSM. The CMM administers Culture, Heritage, Education and Sports and Recreation working committees. The officials and executive committees are administered by each tribal council.
